Industry Knowledge

1. What Wire Rope Sizes Can GT-400 Swaging Machine Handle? – Complete Capacity Overview

The GT-400 hydraulic swaging machine is a medium-capacity bench-top press designed to handle wire rope diameters from 2 mm to 12 mm (1/16 inch to 1/2 inch), making it the ideal choice for general rigging shops, small sling manufacturers, and maintenance facilities that need to terminate medium-duty wire ropes for lifting, towing, and architectural applications.

With a maximum pressing force of 400 kN (40 tons) and a throat depth of 95 mm, the GT-400 covers approximately 85% of common wire rope termination applications. The machine accepts aluminum, copper, and stainless steel sleeves, producing terminations that retain 95–100% of rope breaking strength across its entire diameter range – from delicate 2 mm aircraft cable up to heavy 12 mm galvanized lifting slings.

2. Capacity Comparison: GT-400 vs. Other Swaging Machines

The GT-400 occupies the "sweet spot" between small portable swagers and large industrial presses. The chart below illustrates the diameter range coverage of each model.

Wire Rope Diameter Range by Swaging Machine Model (mm)

GT-60 (micro portable)
0.8–4 mm
GT-200 (portable hydraulic)
1.5–8 mm
GT-400 (bench medium)
2–12 mm
GT-500 (bench heavy)
3–16 mm
GT-1000 (floor industrial)
6–32 mm

3. Required Swaging Force by Rope Diameter – GT-400 Capability

The chart below shows the minimum required swaging force for different rope diameters compared to the GT-400's 400 kN capacity.

Fig. 2 – The GT-400's 400 kN capacity comfortably handles ropes up to 12 mm (requires 390 kN).

4. Termination Strength by Diameter – Pull-Out Force Data

The GT-400 produces terminations that retain 97% or higher of rope MBL across the entire diameter range.

7. Frequently Asked Questions About GT-400 Wire Rope Size Capacity

Q1: Can the GT-400 swage 7x19 construction wire rope?
A1: Yes. The GT-400 handles all common constructions including 1x7, 1x19, 7x7, and 7x19 IWRC up to 12 mm diameter. For 7x19 at 12 mm, the required force is ~390 kN – within the machine's capacity.

Q2: Does the GT-400 work with stainless steel wire rope?
A2: Yes, for diameters up to 10 mm. Stainless steel requires approximately 10–15% higher swaging force than galvanized. For 12 mm stainless steel, required force exceeds 400 kN, so we recommend limiting stainless to 10 mm.

Q3: What is the smallest sleeve the GT-400 can swage?
A3: With the GT-D4 die set, the GT-400 swages sleeves for 2 mm diameter rope (minimum sleeve OD 4 mm). For smaller diameters (0.8–1.5 mm), use the GT-60 micro swager.

Q4: Can custom dies be ordered for non-standard sizes?
A4: Yes. GT-400 accepts custom die sets for non-standard diameters (e.g., 11 mm, 13 mm). Minimum order: 2 sets, lead time 3–4 weeks.
